Comprehensive Dental Exams
It is important for your overall health and wellbeing to have regular dental exams. A comprehensive dental exam includes assessment of:
- Your teeth – for any signs of decay, cracks and vitality
- Soft Tissues – for any abnormalities (including cancer screening)
- Gum (gingiva) health – to assess any signs of gingivitis or periodontitis
- Jaw joints (Temporo-Mandibular Joints, TMJ) – to assess grinding and clenching

- Oral Hygiene and Dietary Analysis
A full mouth X-Ray (OPG) is used to assess teeth, bone and other structures.

As part of your comprehensive exam, other diagnostic aids may need to be required, which include full mouth digital intra-oral x-rays, and pulp vitality and percussion tests. In addition, we use the latest state-of-the-art intra-oral cameras that give you a first-hand insight into your oral environment.

Scale & Cleans
Along with a comprehensive exam, scale and cleans are very important to the health of your mouth, as well as your overall health and well-being. Tartar, which is the hard substance formed when plaque mixes with your saliva, attaches to your teeth and cannot be removed with a toothbrush, and requires professional cleaning. If left untreated, tartar grows in size, and can lead to periodontal disease in susceptible individuals. This is an irreversible disease that causes bone loss and complete destruction of surrounding tissues, and eventually leads to tooth loss.
Gum Disease
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the early stages of gum disease. This stage usually presents with bleeding, swollen gums. When plaque forms, it sticks to the tooth surface near the gum line. Plaque contains bacteria. Your body’s natural response to bacteria is to try to flush it out of your system, thus the body’s natural defence is to send blood to the area, hence what causes the bleeding. Gingivitis is a reversible disease, however, if left untreated, can lead to the more serious and irreversible disease called periodontitis.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is an irreversible disease that can be caused by a combination of plaque and tartar, environmental stressors and your body’s defence mechanism. Periodontitis most commonly progresses on from gingivitis, so it is important to catch this disease early. Smoking and diabetes are the most influential factors that cause rapid progression of this disease.
Mouthguards
Mouthguards are a plastic material used to protect your teeth and jaws from injuries during outdoor activities including sports. They are commonly worn on the upper teeth, and come in a variety of colours. Custom-fitted mouthguards provide the best protection against any facial injuries.

Mouthguards that are purchased from grocery/department stores do not provide adequate protection, causing a poor fit, trauma to soft tissues, and the increased risk of damage to the facial area. Please contact us if your child is playing sports without a custom mouthguard – this could lead to unwanted injuries at a young age.
Fillings
Amalgam, or “silver fillings” as they are commonly called, are continually being rejected due to their unsightly appearance and mercury component. Amalgam fillings are metal fillings and can contract with hot and cold foods and drinks; your tooth does not flex with these changes, causing micro-cracks. Over a number of years, these micro-cracks turn into more prominent cracks, which can lead to more serious damage.
